It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of retired English Department Chair Miriam Burstein ’41.
A beloved teacher to generations of Hunterites, Miriam’s contribution to her alma mater can hardly be overstated. Hunter College High School was her life, and hundreds, if not thousands, of us were the beneficiaries of her dedication and intellect. In addition to the profound influence she had on countless students within the classroom, she also provided compassionate guidance in her role as senior class advisor, and was a mentor to many teachers.
After graduating from Barnard College in 1945 with a BA in English, and MA from Columbia University in 1946 Miriam returned to Hunter to teach English. She eventually became Department Chair, a position she held until her retirement in 1981.
Miriam died peacefully on December 4th in hospice care, surrounded by family and friends. Donations in Miriam's name can be made to the "HCHSAA - Miriam Burstein Award Fund" and sent to HCHSAA at 695 Park Avenue, Hunter College East, Room 1314E, New York, NY 10065. The award is presented to graduating seniors who, by commitment to the life of the mind as well as by general academic excellence, reflect the humanist tradition.
