Adventures in Film: Mynette Louie '93 and Casimir Nozkowski '94 discuss their new movies


Join HCHS alumni Mynette Louie ’93 and Casimir Nozkowski ’94 as they discuss their new movies, I Carry You with Me and The Outside Story. Louie, a producer, and Nozkowski, a director, are independent filmmakers working in New York on subjects that touch on many of today’s current issues including immigration, race relations, and the #MeToo movement. Learn about their careers and their creative process, their efforts to premiere movies in the time of Covid, and their lives while students at Hunter.

Casimir Nozkowski and Mynette Louie

Mynette Louie is an Emmy-nominated, multiple Spirit Award-winning producer. Her credits include Heidi Ewing's I Carry You With Me (in theaters Jan 2021, winner of Sundance 2020 NEXT Innovator and Audience Awards, NYFF selection), Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour's Black Box (on Amazon Prime Oct 6, 2020), Carlo Mirabella-Davis' Swallow (Tribeca 2019, 23 festival awards), Jennifer Fox's The Tale (Sundance 2018, Emmy/Golden Globe/Spirit Award nominee), Karyn Kusama's The Invitation (SXSW 2015), Martha Stephens’ & Aaron Katz’s Land Ho! (Sundance 2014, Spirit Award Cassavetes winner), Tze Chun’s Children of Invention (Sundance 2009), and Andrew Bujalski’s Mutual Appreciation (SXSW 2006). Mynette is on the Board of Directors for Film Independent and serves as an advisor to the Sundance Institute, SXSW, Tribeca, and IFP. She was named one of Business Insider's "12 Movie Producers at the Top of Their Game to Watch in 2020 and Beyond," Ted Hope's “21 Brave Thinkers of Truly Free Film,” and Indiewire's “100 Filmmakers to Follow on Twitter.” Mynette won the 2013 Independent Spirit Piaget Producers Award and is a member of the diversity committee in the Producers branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. A native New Yorker, Mynette graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard, where she studied Chinese literature and film.   

Casimir Nozkowski
 is a New York filmmaker whose work has been written about in the New York Times and featured on The Tonight Show, NBC, MSNBC, PBS, AMC, IFC, and NPR. He co-created the landmark viral video phenomenon, Crying While Eating and has written, directed and/or edited over 100 short films - which have premiered at festivals like Sundance, SXSW, Telluride, Tribeca, Hot Docs and San Diego Comic Con, been Vimeo Staff Picks or Shorts of the Week and viewed millions of times online. He wrote and produced the first ever trailer for Mad Men, the final trailer for Breaking Bad, and multiple Promax award-winning ad campaigns for cable television. He sits on the board of directors for Rooftop Films and wrote and directed his first feature film The Outside Story starring Brian Tyree Henry, Sonequa Martin-Green, Sunita Mani, Olivia Edward and Asia Kate Dillon, which was slated to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2020 until it was postponed due to Covid-19. It will be released in 2021.
